Leadership Recognition

“Leadership in the OCDSB is the demonstration of personal initiative to achieve a positive outcome.”

Students

As representatives of the student population, our Student Leadership Team provides input for our school-wide events and fundraising for the community. The Team regularly raises money for both local and global concerns. Student groups from across grade levels learn about and raise money for such organizations as World Wildlife Federation, and Child Haven International. Our students also show leadership in sports, through earning a variety of regional and Board-wide championships while being noticed for their sportsmanship as well. In addition to informal recognition on a regular basis, we also acknowledge their contributions in our classrooms, school announcements, newsletters, assemblies, our principal’s report to school council, and end-of-year awards ceremonies. As well, we recognize student leadership by incorporating their suggestions into our planning. Students feel they have a voice in the school as they regularly make suggestions which are implemented. Our E-Club has been involved in monitoring our recycling program as well as several energy-saving initiatives. Our Student Council plans many exciting events for the school to help build spirit and a sense of community. We are very proud of our Vincent Massey students. Our Adobe Youth Voices group has created our Adobe Lounge which is where the creative process of telling impactful stories through technology unfolds.

Staff

Vincent Massey has been identified as one of the top Professional Learning Communities in Ontario. This is due to the exemplary leadership and professionalism of each and every staff member within our shared leadership model. Division meetings and discussions regularly focus on how we can improve the learning of each and every student and continue to make Vincent Massey a safe, caring and fun place in which to learn.

Our Special Education staff work with identified special education students and their teachers to ensure they receive the best possible learning opportunities in the regular program.

Our ELL teachers support our ELL students in every facet of their learning.

All of our teachers play a leadership role in working to our motto, “Refuse to Lose”. We all work together to do our best to reach each and every child. We are very proud of our results.

We are very proud of the Shared Leadership model which operates at Vincent Massey. All staff have areas of interest in which they are very happy to take the lead. The synergy which results is nothing short of amazing.

Parents/Guardians/Volunteers

Our School Council forms an integral part of our Professional Learning Community. The Council has developed Goals and Action plans which align with the school’s Mission, Vision, Values and School Improvement Plan. The Council has funded the purchase of gym equipment, violin repairs, playground beautification and a variety of other initiatives to improve student learning. The Council leads an annual Book Exchange program which is very successful in our community. The Council hosts an annual Multicultural Dinner which is the highlight of the year. All parents are extremely supportive and positive partners in the education of their children at VM. Special thanks to community volunteers, who truly make a difference through their dedication to the Vincent Massey School Community.

Community

The Ottawa Volunteers in Education (OVIE) provides us with a group of wonderful volunteers. Big Brother and Big Sisters provide mentors as well as run the Go Girls program for our Intermediate Girls. The Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre provides programming for some of our at-risk students. In addition to receiving community support we also give back to our community in a variety of ways.
