Measures of Student Achievement and Success
Our students in grade 3 and grade 6 participate in provincial EQAO assessment of reading, writing and mathematics. Their results are on the following page. Assessment of learning is designed to align with learning styles as well as multiple intelligences and includes diagnostic, formative and summative components. This gathering of information helps the teacher to identify needs, strategies and interventions that will help with the planning and delivery of curriculum expectations. Students are involved in various performances of their learning including public speaking, dramatic productions, musical performances, etc. We are very successful in a variety of national contests including Gauss Mathematics, Pythagoras Math, the Great Canadian Geography Challenge and the annual Math Olympics. Our sports teams are very successful and behave in an exemplary manner in inter-mural competitions.
School Improvement Plans and Initiatives
Each year, OCDSB schools participate in the School Improvement Planning process. Vincent Massey has a school based committee that meets together to create goals for our students based on data gained from EQAO results as well as ongoing classroom assessment observations.
Our School Improvement focus for this year is in the area of Numeracy. By June 2014, students will develop an understanding that numbers are related to one another by composing and decomposing numbers to support proportional reasoning as measured by the evidence of progress.
JK: Begin to make use of one-to-one correspondence in counting objects and matching groups of objects.
SK: Demonstrate an understanding of number relationships for numbers 0-10, through investigation.
Grade 1: Compose and decompose numbers to 20 in a variety of ways, using concrete materials.
Grade 2: Compose and decompose two-digit numbers in a variety of ways, using concrete materials.
Grade 3: Compose and decompose three digit numbers in a variety of ways, using concrete materials.
Grade 4: Represent, compare, and order whole numbers to 10, 000 using a variety of tools.
Grade 5: Represent, compare, and order whole numbers and decimal numbers from 0.01 to 100 000, using a variety of tools and strategies.
Grade 6: Represent, compare, and order whole numbers and decimal numbers from 0.001 to 1,000 000 using a variety of tools and strategies.
Grade 7: Generate multiples and factors, using a variety of tools and strategies.
Grade 8: Determine common factors and common multiples using the prime factorization.
